Who has experience with the 17wsm and the 17 caliber centerfire options that are available? I ask because while I absolutely love the way my Savage 17wsm shoots, I don't love the way it functions. As most of y'all know 17wsm platforms are pretty limited. Also, I'd like to be able to reload ammo for it. So I got to thinking about getting a centerfire 17. There's a few options out there so I figured I might as well ask the ever so knowledgeable folks on OSA who are such a wealth of knowledge in these matters. Bring on the informed opinions please and thanks!

.17 Rem is not even in the same ball park as the .17 wsm, it's incredibly fast, 4200fps iirc. If you're going to reload I say go for it, it's a pretty limited platform as well. I've got zero experience with the .17 Fireball.

The .204 will outrun the .17 in center fire with a heavier bullet.
My 55 grain Noslers in .243 WSSM run 4170 fps.
A 52 grain in 22-250 will run 4150fps
Lots of options out there.

Dennis I have both the 204 and 17 hornet and believe you are correct. That said, owning both and shooting both is sort of like owning and shooting a 243 and a 6 mm !! I would not get rid of either of these little screamers. I do believe the 17 hornet will not be as hard on barrels as the 204!

I hear ya. I have a 22-250 and like it. The 17wsm for me is filling a gap between 22lr and 223/22-250.

Where we shoot Pdogs...the centerfires are too loud. The .17 WSM doesnt scare them away like a centerfire cartridge does.
I always want to upgrade my Bmag...but at the end of the day it does everything I want it to, is paid for and I can handle the "quirks" it has.
