This is why we can't have nice things. We keep doing our jobs as Law Enforcement and the courts? well... read on. ----------------------------------- Holly Matkin22 hours ago Tacoma, WA – A 20-time felon wanted on an escape warrant was ordered to be held on just $5,000 bail after he allegedly brawled with Pierce County deputies while carrying a gun and methamphetamine last week. Washington Department of Corrections (DOC) officers and detectives from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department’s (PCSD) Special Investigations unit joined forces last week to track down a violent felony offender who had an outstanding warrant for escaping from community custody, the PCSD said in a press release on Tuesday. They tracked the unnamed suspect to a residence located in the 5900-block of Portland Avenue East on Jan. 5, where they spotted him outside a home. The 38-year-old career criminal took off running as deputies closed in, but one of the deputies was able to grab onto the “puffy jacket” the suspect was wearing, according to the PCSD. The suspect managed to free himself from the jacket and proceeded to get into a physical altercation with the deputies and DOC officers, according to the press release. He was ultimately taken into custody. After his arrest, a deputy picked up the suspect’s coat and noticed it was “unusually heavy,” the PCSD said. They searched the jacket and allegedly located a loaded handgun with a chambered round in one pocket. They also located the suspect’s debit card, social security card, 4.7 grams of methamphetamine, and $400 cash in the jacket, according to the PCSD. The 20-time felon claimed the jacket wasn’t his, despite his identification being inside of it, the sheriff’s office said. He also allegedly told the deputies to “get rid of” the gun multiple times, explaining that “he was going to get a life sentence” if he was caught with it, according to the PCSD. The suspect was ultimately booked into jail for his outstanding escape warrant and for possession of the firearm. Prosecutors formally charged him with obstructing an officer and unlawful possession of a firearm in the first degree. According to the PCSD, the suspect’s 20 felony convictions include theft, residential burglary, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a stolen vehicle, and eluding, among others. He has also racked up nine gross misdemeanor convictions, and has had warrants issued for his arrest in a staggering 15 separate cases. The career criminal pleaded not guilty when he went before the judge for arraignment on his latest charges, according to the sheriff’s office. The judge then set his bail at just $5,000. “At the scene, the suspect’s girlfriend told him she would post his bail once it was set,” the PCSD noted. The sheriff’s office said DOC is tracking the suspect’s jail status and that they plan to intercept him at the jail on his DOC escape warrant if he ends up posting bail. No other details about the suspect were immediately released.
