Any hunting round, soft point or v-max bullets. My uncle only owns shotguns but he doesn't like to hunt deer with them. He will borrow any one of my AR15 223 and bring home deer and has done so for many years. He uses 55gr
My BIL has used a bolt action .223 for the decade I've hunted with him and hasn't had a problem killing the deer yet. I started using an AR with .223 64gr soft nose about 4 years ago. Handle a deer every year with it.
.223 wasn't legal for deer when I started hunting. .243 was the smallest . But at the same time .30 carbine was legal. I'm no fan of .223 for deer.

I have taken deer all over oklahoma with .223 in an AR and bolt action and never had one go more than 20 yards, I have used remington sp and win silvertip even wolf HP I haven't tried the win deer season in .223 yet but I like it in .308 .
I used a 223 hornady z max for a deer, she didn’t go far about 25 yards. The only thing I didn’t like about it was there was no blood trail, not one drop of blood. Thankfully I didn’t need it.

No blood trail, but the bullet destroys the innards as it disintegrates internally at 490 yards which is my longest kill to date with that bullet. 4150 fps from the muzzle. Speed kills.
I killed the largest hog I ever seen with my own eyes in the flesh with 55gr V-max .223
just 1 shot dead right there.
Over 450 lbs.
I say this because I was given a 450 lb Hampshire and the wild one I shot was much longer and laying on it's side the thing was as tall as my knee cap.
The 450 lb hog was below the knee cap by 2 inches.
These little pills for me go in about 2" and then start coming apart and by the time you are in 4" deep
the hole they create is fist sized and just like a hand grenade going off inside the animals.
My friend does not like that 55 V-Max so much he actually said don't you have something that does not destroy so much meat.
Yea he was shooting 150 gr 30-30 before the .223 and killed dozens of deer and only 2 dropped where he shot them.
All the rest had to be tracked and I was always called out to find them.
I will say this he lost 75% of them to coyotes when the 30-30 shot them.
Yea bad shot placement.
But he gets bad shot placement with the V-Max also and they go down.
One was shot under the skin and the bullet traveled down the length of the deer and entered the rump.
Entire left side was a blood clot under the hide.
No vitals hit.
It jumped the fence and made it 20 feet and piled up.
Died of shock I suppose.
