225hp outboard faster than 250hp?

    I don't know anything about boats, but it could be as simple as a weight difference.

    Boat weight, hull shape, prop angle/pitch, gearing in the driveline, etc

    Still leaves prop angle/pitch, gearing in the driveline, etc. Hull and all may be the same but different motors have different specs beyond HP.

    Both have the same 2.6 L six cylinder in line engine at 635 lbs and 5800/6400 full throttle rpm. Also the same 1:85 to 1 gear ratio.

    Clearly there's something different to give the extra 25hp though.

    I believe Mercury uses engine computer programming for the different horsepower ratings on the Verado outboards. Yamaha also does it with their big four stroke SHO outboards. I think all it takes is a reflash or maybe a chip to jump from 225 to 300hp. Modern four stroke technology but I prefer the older high winding two strokes.
