Howdy man...hope you're doing okay. Also hope you have your answer figured out too. FWIW, I have a 17HMR too and love it for what it is. Regarding a get home gun: I don't think it a bad idea to play out in your head next time you're welding all the obstacles that might be between you and home. Stuff like other vehicles with armed combatants, rioters, looters, mobs etc... None of those play well Into the wheelhouse of a rimfire...especially multiple attackers or anything behind a barrier harder/thicker than plywood. One of my urban combat schools (this one happened to be the Basic Urban Skills Trainer) offered us the ability to see a video test on how well common military rounds penetrated barriers. You might be surprised on how much better a 7.62x39 did than a 5.56 on things like brick and concrete at an angle. Anyways, I could blab about this subject for hours, but in short, I'd highly recommend something that can 1) Fully penetrate a vehicle broadside [not including engine], and 2) possess the ability to quickly, if not immediately incapacitate on a less than perfect hit. Pumping multiple rounds of .22LR into everyone can get old in a hurry. *Ha! I found that old video! Worth a watch to everyone. You never know what's going to be found on YouTube.*
