I don't know a lot about the old blackpowder stuff, these I found are interesting.

.45-120

It looks like he was testing a 40, 50 and 60 grain blackpowder loads. I'm guessing because the cases were cut, they were compressed loads.

The original .45-120 is a LONG round. I guess trimming them so far back doesn't affect anything because of the rim headspace.

I can't believe how awesome the current timeline is.....for now

Im wondering if they didnt have them cut to use as measurers for the powder loads for something else.

That would be my guess.

40 gr in a .50 cal rifle isn't much of a charge. Maybe, 80 gr, 90 gr, 100 gr,
110 gr, 120 gr.
I use the Lee dippers, often and have made my own from brass cartridges.

Definitely interesting, so many possibilities of what was going on.

I have loaded my .50 cal up to 150 gr. accuracy was not good. (8" @ 50 yrds) and not fun. 110 gr was 6" @ 200 yards and 2" @ 100 yards. Rifle probably better, but my old eyes and open sights aren't.

I made a dipper out of a 22 case for reloading 25ACP. My powder dispenser doesn’t do well with charges below 2.5 grains and as little as I reload the stuff this was a very workable solution.
