I remember clean pressed white shirts, aprons and ties on grocery clerks. I also remember the times when new or used car salesmen and real estate agents did NOT wear cowboy hats and jeans. People should not look like a bum outside of church either especially in customer service occupations. My mother had a real estate agent in the early 1980's. He had a clean 1976 Cadillac Seville. Navy blue suit and tie. Clean-shaven and clean cut. Age 45. Well-mannered and well-spoken.
In the 1980's I worked at a hamburger joint. You did not dare come to work unshaven or with soiled uniforms. No sneakers, only brown work shoes. No loose long hair. Hair tucked up neatly under uniform hats. No mustaches and most certainly no beards or even stubble. No visible tatts. No smelling of BO. The owner had the establishment so clean one could eat off the floor. Door glass had to be cleaned free of hand prints. No dirty tables ever. I even had to polish the brass trim in the dining room with Brasso by hand. The male owner, in his 40's, clean-cut, clean-shaven, with dress shirt and tie drove a new red 1985 Corvette. Store managers had to wear dress shirts and ties and dress shoes.
