Just want to hear your thoughts on one vs the other.
I have owned many .308 rifles over the years and I like the round. I have never had a 6.5. I am looking at buying a good bolt gun for long range.
Thanks.

6.5 BC makes 308 a dog at range. I'm looking to grab a 6.5 barrel for my AR-10. I need to order an Armilite upper and grab a barrel and be able to swap uppers out.

It will depend on how far you really intend to shoot. If you aren't at 800-1000 regularly then I'd stay with 308.

I have had three 6.5's. I would never even consider going back to .308. I was a .308 fanboy too, but the 6.5 beats it in everything except muzzle energy. by 500 yards your high BC 140 grain bullets are carrying more power than most of your .308 rounds, and it is so soft shooting that it is a joy to shoot for hours without developing bad flinching habits.

This
First try at long range was a 308, I was badly outgunned.
Second try was 6.5 Creedmore I loved 123 Amax after shooting 308, but quickly learned 140 Berger hybrids BC was nicer than 123 especially after 650yds wind can play hell.

I'm shooting factory 140gr Hornady VLD match through my 6.5 Creedmoor custom Surgeon action rifle and I love it. Far superior to a 308. Noticeably and fairly dramatically different windage and elevation correction at anything beyond 600 yards. I like being able to head shoot silhouettes at 800 yards with factory ammo.

better BC for distance shots, higher sectional density for comparable bullet weights and a significant reduction in recoil the 6.5 wins all day.
