I'd like to find out the bullet drop for an average 7.62x51 NATO surplus round (Malaysian or Portuguese) fired out of a M1A with a 22" barrel at about 800 feet altitude. I'm planning to ding the steel silhouettes at Red Castle, which start at 200 yards and go out to 500. I've only found ballistics online for a commercial .308 round, which I suspect will have a higher velocity and probably shouldn't be fired out of a M1A anyway. Does anyone have such a chart specific for NATO ammo, or a link to one? Thanks!

What grain bullet is that surplus stuff? 147?

I'd just use one of the many ballistic calc online and plug everything in. Finding out the BC is going to be the hardest part. Does the box list the FPS?

I'm betting it's going to look something like this:

Range Velocity Impact Drop ToF Energy Drift
0 2750 -0.5 0 0 2469 0
100 2517 0 2.67 0.12 2068 0
200 2301 -5.02 10.87 0.24 1728 0
300 2096 -16.66 25.68 0.38 1434 0
400 1903 -36.25 48.44 0.53 1182 0
500 1721 -65.49 80.86 0.69 967 0

Thanks - I used a table for .308 Winchester to get a rough idea, and was astonished when I got a drop of some 56 inches at 500 yards. Surely that can't be right??

Winchester has a 7.62 NATO load. They even have a ballistics calculator on their web page. You can check it out for comparison to your numbers but 56 inches sounds about right for that load at 500 yards. So, are you going to be shooting with iron sights or with a scope?

Oh, I'll be using a scope. The days of clearly seeing a steel ram at 500 yards, over open sights... is long past :)

Thanks for the tip about Winchester's table!
