9mm vs .40sw what to carry

I like 9mm for a handgun intended for defense against 2-legged predators.
The added penetration that .40 brings to the table doesn't justify the longer splits, parts breakage, capacity reduction, increased risk of over-penetration and ammo cost/availability.
Having said that, if I was forced to carry a 40, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

A wise old man said once not to get too wrapped up in which cartridge is the best one. What counts, he said, was where you hit your foe, not what you hit him with. A brainstem shot with a 9 mm will stop a man more surely than a leg wound with a 45.

Bullet placement is key here.

I'd much rather shoot him in the leg with the 45. Especially the femoral artery 😜

I get where you're going though.
