Make sure you cover the bottom of the trap with litter (live trap ) cats hate the wire on their paws. I also cut a coons tail off and hang it inside the trap so I can blow in the breeze. I'm far from any kind of expert but learned a few lessons last year.

so your saying pack the bottom of the trap with dirt or something similar? i have not been doing that, ill give it a try.
Good idea with the tail.

cover the bottom with dirt or leaf litter, some are picky don't like the wire texture. Dirt is nice because you can see if a cat walked in, but didn't commit all the way to the pan. Also, try to use cages with trip pans in the middle of the cage as opposed to the back, as a cat will lunge forward when spooked, unlike a canine which will jump back.
