My end goal is not to completely give up alcohol, but to lose some weight and get back to where I can sit down and have a drink or two and catch a buzz.

You're trying to dance with the devil but you want to lead.

It doesn't work that way. Don't ask me how I know.

You know what to do.,

Water fasting ... Try the 72-hour rolling fast.

I was like you and the wife. Enjoyed a drink or 2 nearly every evening. Thought I might have a problem because I did have a problem in college and quite cold turkey for several years. Anyway, I started pain management and they frown on drinking. You know the only time I crave a drink?? The week before my monthly appointment to see the PA. 🤷 I told him about it a couple months ago and he laughed and said "You are the most unaddicted person I know!! But you sure don't like being told what to do!" 😂😂😂

The thing is you have to be brutally honest with yourself. Nobody else can tell you whether you actually have a problem or not. They can only tell you what it looks like to them based on their own life experiences. Only other thing I'll say is this -- until you figure it out for yourself it's best to err on the side of caution.

There is a cardiologist on YouTube who believes sugar/flour/alcohol/drugs all trigger the same processes in the brain. I'll find go find his channel for you.

Dopamine is released, we become addicted to that, whether it alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn, whatever. You have to stop that trigger and allow the brain to "rewire" itself.

It's not BS, and I can tell you if you are an addict to one thing it's incredibly easy to slide into another addiction without realizing it. We become hardwired to get that dopamine charge.

I think that's pretty much what this guy says ... In a world of videos I can't finish he actually will hold my interest to the very end.

I can only speak from experience, so the same may not be true for you.

1. Either quit, or don't. Quitting "for now" doesn't work. Sobriety takes dedication, even if approached on a day by day basis. Having a date that you can drink again moves the focus from sobriety to the date that you can drink again. If it's not good for you now it won't be good for you in a month.

2. One thing at a time. Don't make things more difficult for yourself if it can be avoided. If I had tried to stop drinking and smoking at the same time I would have failed at both.

When I was in my 20's people told me I was an alcoholic.
Whatever.
I just liked to drink.
I walked home from the OKC Fair one day and I lived in Spencer.
I told the wife I did not want to go to the Fair etc etc .
Anyway when I got to Douglas and 36th street I went into the store there to get some beer and thought

FOOL you are dehydrated and drinking will only make it worse.
I got a 20 oz. DR Pepper and a Snickers.
Much better.

Do not cut the sugars out and beer or booze at the same time.
I see nothing wrong with 1 soda a day and some chocolate.
Drink plenty of water during the day.

I worked at FAA for 10 years and ate a sandwich and a soda and candy bar for lunch every day for a couple years.
I wore 30-36 pants then and was that size for a few years.

I decided to eat healthier and cut out all the soda and no more candy bar instead I had water and 2 pieces of fruit with my sandwich.
Orange , apple or banana .

Wow what a mistake that was in just a couple months I had to go to 32-36 pants.

Fruit is not the answer. I have seen others get fat on fruit you must watch it on that.

I used to drink every day and now I drink less than 30 a year.
I seen all the old guys around me start looking really old and getting weaker and weaker.
I did not want to get to their condition.
My dad and his dad were both alcoholics and mean and drank at work and home.

I am more concerned with my health than I am wanting to get a buzz.
I do not need a buzz off anything as I am not trying to escape anything.
I disowned my parents and siblings and life is GOOD.

Good luck to you.

I'd take a real hard look at how much dependence you have on alcohol. Take an honest assessment (there are some questions to ask, google it) - most of the folks who are addicted to alcohol (like me) - can't drink one or two drinks, ever. What's the point, lol?

Quitting for me was one day at a time, and I can honestly say I wish I never took up drinking. Looking back, it never improved my life one iota.

And that sugar craving? Alcohol converts right into sugar. I used to replace it with ice cream, but I was young and worked it all off.

As for still craving it? Not a bit. I miss some of the old habits I've quit, but after 31 years sober, I can tell you booze is the last thing I'd pick back up.

Chewing tobacco on the other hand......
If you're speaking literally, alcohol doesn't convert into sugar............if you're speaking as in a craving for sweets, then that may very well be.

Congratulations on your steps to cut alcohol, I'm happy for you. I can't say I had a problem with drinking in the past, but I could drink a case in a day then not drink for weeks. A couple of years ago after the failure of a business andpersonal issues put my family and marriage on the ropes. my family walked into a church that a class mate of my oldest daughter kept inviting her too(the kids dad was the preacher). I had never considered myself a religious man and went because I figured that if I can't control what influenced my children I could control who influenced my children. I didn't realize it at the time, but slowly by being around those living for God and a clean life I started getting my stuff together. Not realizing it I quit drinking (a year and a half since my last drink), I quit vaping, my language has cleaned up alot, and I'm not nearly as angry about anything and everything anymore. I'm far from perfect, but a completely different man than I use to be just 2 years ago. My wife and I are happy my kids are happy and well behaved. We have friends of true substance now that we can truly rely on if we need to, and they us. Church saved my family, marriage, and life without me even realizing. If your not part of a congregation I would urge you to possibly seek one out, if you are I would talk with your pastor about what he can do to help you with your journey.

I can attest, as I really wanted to quit during this past summer. I went to some flavored carbonated waters and if I really want to feel like drinking, I will have a club soda with lime. Fancy? No, but it gives me a beverage besides water and I don’t wake up at 2am hungover and unable to sleep.
