Creep travels half the world to harass online teen gamer… and gets shot by her mom – cops
Crazy Kiwi comes a cropper

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/27/troy_george_skinner_new_zealand_shot_by_mom/

(For those unfamiliar with it, El Reg is a technology-oriented news site out of the UK. Often has some very good stuff for those with an interest in such things, and the BOFH columns are always entertaining.)

A New Zealand gamer who flew halfway around the world to confront a 14-year-old girl he met online got more than he bargained for when her mom shot him, according to police.

Troy George Skinner, 25, flew from his home in Auckland to Sydney, Australia, took a connecting flight to Los Angeles, USA, then from Los Angeles to Washington DC, and finally caught a bus from DC to Goochland County, Virginia, in order to reach the unnamed girl he had been interacting with online for several months, cops said this week.

Although that might sound vaguely romantic, the truth was much darker, it is claimed: she had told him over a gaming chat app called, appropriately enough, Discord, that she no longer wanted to talk to him, sparking his trans-Pacific passage.

And when he arrived at her house on June 22, he was carrying a knife, pepper spray, and some duct tape he had bought at a nearby Walmart, it is alleged.

Dressed in a black hoodie, he rang the doorbell and told the girl's mother, who was at home with both her teenage daughters, that he needed help and had been hitchhiking for 30 miles, we're told.

Second Amendment showdown
She refused to answer the door, prompting him to try to break into a basement door at the back of the house, it is claimed. At which point the mother – who had no idea of her daughter's online interactions – warned him she had a gun.

Clearly not aware that when a threatened Virginian mom says she has a gun, it's pretty likely she has a gun and is willing to use it, the six-foot-one, 275lb Skinner returned to the front door, threw a stone through the window, and stuck his hand through the hole in an effort to unlock it, it is alleged.

At which point, the mother fired twice at him, striking him once in the neck. Skinner attempted to run away, but collapsed in a neighbor's front yard – which is where the cops said they found him shortly after, and medivaced him to a nearby hospital.

"This was not random," said Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew at a press conference on Tuesday. "This was not random, not spontaneous. This was something very planned," adding: "It's a new world."

Skinner is expected to survive, and will be charged with breaking and entering with a deadly weapon with the intent to commit a serious offense. Federal charges are under consideration.

All of which is pretty terrifying and should serve to reinforce the advice given to teenagers when interacting online: don't tell people your full name, and don't tell them where you live. ®

I'm glad to see this getting international press; it's a great warning to the others.

Gamers are the biggest loosers on the face of the earth. They contribute very little to society.
Wow! That is your takeaway. GAMERS are "loosers?" I would think that it would be more correct to say unstable psychopaths that are willing to travel around the world in order to confront someone they met in a game are "loosers" (or, better yet, we'll use the correct term, losers). (BTW: I'm a contributing member of society myself and just so happen to be a gamer as well. In case you didn't know that could actually exist)

Good on the mom, except I think she needs to get to the range a little more often so she can do a slightly better job if something of this sort ever happens again.

Careful with blanket statements such as this. There are some people who take gaming way to seriously and don't contribute to society, but they are not the whole, just a small sum. Everyone I know who is a gamer has a job, pays their bills, and basically lives a productive life. They may not live life like you would, but thats a far cry from not contributing to society.

The comment makes me wonder how much one expects a 14 year old girl to actually contribute to society. She was after all a gamer.

As to the mom, "Way to stop the threat." but going forward, be more involved in the kid's day to day activities.

Pretty sure this guy was some kind of a nut. A guy like that, he'll he'll do anything for love, and it might be the wrong thing which in this case it was.. He picked the wrong thing to do and the mom took care of it and good for her. Things could have turned out a lot worse. Cautionary tale for the young people. They need to stop doing that.

He just says that they loose a lot of stuff. They might weigh four hundred pounds sitting on a bed interfering with our elections.
They might (in the very next generation) clog the health care system with preventable yellow lung disease from all the Cheeto dust they're inhaling. Who knows what havoc they'll loose upon the world next? Not me, and not you.
