Ammo Can Storage shelf: finish?

I hate painted wood. Paint scratches.
Stain or oil for wood. Poly will also scratch.
But I like it the way it is.
It works and is functional. Leave it alone and spend time and money on something else.

Stained wood also scratches, and does so a lot easier than polyurethane.

So...I'm kinda wondering about doing the burned all around, and just "stain" the ends and leave the shelves "natural burned" look.
I've not had time to mess with it yet...but it sounds like it could work maybe?
