We used 12g Romex wiring houses. Never used the push in feature.
From what I've seen, only the 14 ga wire fits the push-in holes.

They seem to work ok for light loads, but I prefer the side screws.Never use the push in just seemed too easy to come back out

Heat like that is generated by poor connections, be it wiring connections or faulty internals that give poor connection which appears to be your case.Stamped on the backside metal where it screws into the electrical box. Have to remove to see manufacturer, which was easy to see and the country where made was not very easy.
all the wires were looped and attached with screws. The body was either whole or in pieces. One had melted parts.

Yep. Just glad to get them out of the house. Replaced with Eaton made in USA, which I assume means assembled somewhere from parts sourced all over.Where praytell?
It's still allowed in some circumstances but must use the connectors ratel AL/CU. It's perfectly safe if the connection is performed correctly.Thats why they outlawed aluminum wiring
