Let me recommend a product that you all need and is less than $5.

A receptacle tester.

Here is a $4 one from Harbor Freight. It even tests GFCI's

I bought the Klein version and gave it to my son-in-law last week to check his receptacles. He cannot work on some electrical systems because he is extremely colorblind. I used it to diagnose a bad GFI for his outdoor Christmas lights.

I have the Fluke model, but yes those are a good tool to determine if an outlet has the correct polarity.

Not in Oklahoma!
This was my house. I changed all of it to Leviton.

First of all I would never do this but ferchrissakes, I couldn't sleep at night if I did this to someone's home.
That is a interesting consept of outlet wiring!

I picked up on of these ⬇️ at a neighbors garage sale years ago.

The tip glows red in close proximity of the hot wire

The tip is also sized to fit the slots of a outlet.

On the newer receipts, the older ones would accept 12 ga.
You can still buy hospital grade outlets that are rated 20 amps per outlet. My shop is full of them.

Leviton 8300-HW 20-Amp, 125-Volt, Heavy Duty Hospital Grade, Duplex Receptacle, Straight Blade, Self Grounding, White

We picked up a bunch of Levitton 20 amp outlets at Locke Supply. Son no longer has beige colored outlets clashing with the grey walls of his home.

I have several of those in all my tool bags. I found out the hard way, those are not 100% foolproof.
