Not sure if that response was to having the 10/22 in there, I am assuming it is. I personally keep a pistol in my go bag for this very reason. When we were in Moore, we came out of the neighbors storm shelter to find someone had parked (backed in) in their yard (empty driveway) and broke into the house. Couldn't get through to 911 for obvious reasons.

That's exactly why I have my 10/22 in there, I usually have a pistol on me but in the middle of the night things can be forgotten in a rush. When we go under warnings I put my AR pistol in there, strap my Canik to my waist and put my M&P Shield in the diaper bag in the safe room.

I forgot to add that I also have a few adjustable wrenches in there in the event I need to shut off gas or water.

I just cleaned mine last weekend and restocked it. I also pulled the carpet off of my steps. The carpet is good for nothing, but housing spiders. I don't like spiders.

My carpet was poorly installed, I don't know if putting a marine grade carpet and gluing it would help. I had considered it, but the quality of the wood is so poor, I am not gonna bother, and use Tek-dek or one of the composite type boards to replace mine, no carpet. Means no more splinters, or shavings, etc coming off and dirtying up the shelter.

I dont plan to ever use mine. In 49 years I have never needed one but maybe. And I damn sure wont be in it long enough to need a meal or water.

I don't either, but when you have two children in there with you, you have to plan for everything. 99 hit my school and passed over our house, and I have been with in 1-2 miles of just about every other one to hit Moore.

I haven’t either, but I live in the sticks with several giant walnut trees within feet of the outdoor shelter. We have the potential to be trapped in there for awhile until rescue services arrive.
When we installed it, the county emergency services rep came out and took gps readings. Theoretically if a tornado comes through the area, they send someone to check on us.
