Pokinfun explains it nicely. However, while I agree that you usually want an M16 carrier, if you're building a lightweight carbine you can use the AR15 carrier (far right in the picture) to save a bit of weight without going to the fancy ultralight carriers. I would however avoid the two "colt" carriers (left and middle right).
