I'd agree for the most part, but honestly - for just a shooting-range plinker, the models I listed in that post before aren't terrible. .223 isn't a super-jarring recoil round and honestly - Burris, Millet, and even Bushnell make decent optics (with fairly decent QC for the most part). Stay away from brands or models with high-failure rates and for shooting snakes/turtles or just plinking, you'll be fine. If they fail and you've got Backup Irons, then no big deal - your life (or trophy buck) isn't on the line. I couldn't take the thought of my optic dying on me when I was in freezing temps and/or moisture so I got the 553 (and I'm not gonna lie, the fact that it was FDE had a whole lot to do with it too :D). I personally haven't seen a lot of 55X series EOTech's fail and several of the stories I've read online have to do with older models and some quirky stories (or the 51X models and mild abuse), so I was happy with my purchase. If I were only going to the range with it, any of these would have been fine: I have owned (or in the case of one of them, borrowed for an extended period of time) 3 Burris optics now and have been more than happy with every one of them (more impressed with most of them than with more expensive versions made by better brands). Burris 1x35 Extreme: http://swfa.com/Burris-Xtreme-Tactical-SpeedDot-Sights-C65.aspx Burris Speed Dot: http://swfa.com/Burris-SpeedDot-Sights-C63.aspx Burris FastFire: http://swfa.com/Burris-FastFire-Red-Dot-Reflex-Sights-C1811.aspx Haven't heard much about it, but I like Burris Optics, so I might be inclined to give it a try (3x32 AR Tactical): http://swfa.com/Burris-3x32-AR-Tactical-Sight-P12619.aspx Bushnell is about the bottom of what I would trust not to break under normal easy shooting-range conditions (I was never convinced to take one out on my rig for hunting in any kind of extreme conditions): The Bushnell Trophy series: http://swfa.com/Bushnell-Trophy-Red-Dot-Sights-C1746.aspx Bushnell's Holosite http://swfa.com/Bushnell-Holosights-C2669.aspx I don't have any experience with it, but the Vortex Strikefire comes highly recommended by several folks who have used them (again, under mild shooting-range only conditions): http://swfa.com/Vortex-StrikeFire-Red-Dot-Sights-C1462.aspx ATN Compact Digital Ultra is worth a look, but I don't know/trust ATN yet http://swfa.com/ATN-Compact-Digital-Ultra-Sight-P5352.aspx
