[QUOTE="doctorjj, post: 1826801, member: 7292"] The Xantrex 6048 is 6000 watts and runs off of a 48v battery bank. It is surge rated for 12,000 watts. You can stack up to 3 of them and that can basically supply a 200 amp service. They work like a big capacitor. They pull from the grid but if the grid goes down or "browns out" the capacitor starts to drop and it then pulls from the battery bank. You notice no loss of service in your house. It's like a huge UPS for your entire house. If you have a generator, it can monitor your battery power and kick the generator on as needed to recharge the batteries. You can use a much smaller generator as the generator doesn't need to be sized to accomadate the large spiking loads like your AC starting. The invertor and battery pack handles that. Also, your generator doesn't have to run all them time. Only when the batteries start to get low. You can also incoporate solar panels to recharge the batteries and any excess power will be used to decrease the amount you use from the grid. The drawback is the price for the inverter(s) and especially the batteries.
