In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to the First Marine Division in the South Pacific. He saw action at the battles of Guadalcanal, New Guinea and was wounded on Peleliu in the Palau Islands, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. (from his obituary.)

My gun crew at 29 Palms (I'm the one with my right hand on the shoulder of the person holding the HE round)

A little direct fire action

Firing a SEAD (suppression of enemy air defense) mission. An FA18 just dropped its ordnance and we will be covering the egress with HE on the target area. These are precisely timed missions due to the chance of hitting an air asset with an artillery round.

My last Marine Corps Birthday Ball with my wife of 32 years.
