I have a Remington 700 with new fire lapped varmint barrel, timney 1-4lb trigger, lapped bolt an head space set that will be done Tuesday . It's going in a Stockys synthetic with full alluminum block . The new barrel is anew pull off that he is fire lapping using #2,and#1 steps only NOT the course #3 . He stopped the barrel and said Remington could have done better than it did .

Now 1-12 twist barrels I think function best on 55 gr ammo???? What is the best overall stuff to shoot?

Help appreciated!

All guns are picky.
You need to buy a few different brands of ammo and realize Deer must be shot with 55gr or larger to stay legal kills.
What will shoot excellent in your 1:12 may not shoot worth a hoot in another.

Get to buying ammo after the gun is finished and you are heading to the range for testing.
Whichever shoots best head back to that store and buy all of that lot number you can.. that is if you find ammo that shoots to the point of pleasing you.

If the lot number changes on the ammo you may be surprised in the new POI you get.
Or it may shoot exactly the same.

OP, your thinking is not exactly correct. It depends on bullet manufacturer and shape of bullet. Don't believe the "catch-all" twist rates shown in your replies. Check the bullet manufacturer and their twist rate recommendations.

LOL, someone better tell Berger bullets their 64gr FB varmint bullet is going to keyhole at 25 meters with a 1:12 twist.

Nothing heavier than 55grain. 62 grain will keyhole a target at 25m
Do you have a specific brand recommendation?

I do t hunt with 223. I punch paper. So maybe a good practice-range round recommendation and a good accurate target round???

Not sure there is such a thing as good accurate plinking ammo.

If your barrel has a 5.56 or Wylde chamber, M193 FMJ is good. Winchester Q3131, IWI, Federal, Igman are some of the better 5.56.

If its a 223 chamber, you cant really beat Wolf Gold 223 for being in-expensive

As for target (for accuracy) you'll just have to try some of the name brands and find what your rifle likes best. Id start with Sierra Match King HPBT and go from there. Note, 55 grain bullets get a lot less accurate past 400 yards, especially in wind.

Exactly. Gyroscopic stability depends on rotational velocity, so a longer barrel generating higher velocity may stabilize a bullet that a shorter barrel won't even with the same twist. The shape (length) of the bullet also impacts the required rotational velocity for stabilization.
