A book by Varg Freeborn

Varg Freeborns bio is an interesting one. As a rule we typically get our training from squeaky clean Captain America types, people that have avoided criminal violence their entire lives. Varg Freeborn is an exception to that rule, for 25 years his life, his world, was violent. He has an understanding of criminal violence that most of us will never know and wouldn't want to know. His bio is out there if you want to know more about him but this post is about his latest book.

The full title of the book is, "Beyond OODA, Developing the Orientation for Deception, Conflict and Violence". From the title we see that the primary focus of the book is on the Orientation phase of the OODA loop.

I first heard of the OODA Loop about 15 years ago and it was taught then as it is generally taught now, an overly simplistic explaination of a far more expansive subject.

In "self defense" training there are two parts, hard skills and soft skills, hard skills are the physical aspect such as guns, pepper spray and empty hand training. The soft skills are the pyschological aspect. This book helps us understand and develop those soft skills. A firm understanding of these soft skills will help us detect the deceptions of criminal violence and how to develop deceptions of our own to keep us ahead of a criminal threat.

The following links are to 2 parts of a 3 part interview done with Varg Freeborn by Tim Larkin on this book.
