You may have seen this.
I don't remember where I read this years ago but, the article said the NRA was started by or because of some yankee generals after the war talked about how much better the Rebels were at marksmanship with a rifle. They wanted the US to be better prepared next time they illegally invaded a country.

I don't know anything definitive about the history of the NRA, but this link does concern me a bit, mostly because it is to "Politifact."
Just how accurate is Politifact with their "reports."

What first gave me credence in the validity of the video was that one of the people speaking in it was Niger Innis. Roy Innis, Niger’s father, served on the NRA’s Board of Directors for nearly 25 years.
