I think the idea is kinda neat. It does have possibilities.
While I like that it will piss off CA, I just can not like ugly plastic rifles. If I were designing a new rifle, it would be a pump action that uses detachable mags. In 5.56 it would accept AR mags, 308 and others what ever is the most popular in that caliber. It would take modern sites and be able to use weapons lites, etc, but it would be available in wood or composite stocks and have a more classic look to it. Something like the Remg 7600 but with a more inline stock. That way owners could leave it classic or go tacticool, whatever suited them.

Since it takes 870 stocks you could set it up with wood furniture and I bet it would look pretty slick.
