The GOP had the Presidency, Senate, and House not but just a few short years ago; what did they do? They sure as hell didn't secure the border, that's for sure. Trump is the only one that acted like he gave a damn about it, and he got accused of every "ism" and "phobia" the statist press, and too many Americans could throw at him. They (Republicans) aren't any more sincere about securing the border than the Democrats are. You are correct: actions speak louder than words. I think the GOP has also shown us just what they're about. And refugees? How about none. We are full, we have WAY too many illegals from the south here now - enough to change our demographics to the point that the country is no longer the United States of our ancestors. As for the Middle Eastern types, the fact that we have to "fight 'em over there, so we don't have to fight 'em over here", while we let them in in droves is beyond stupid, to the point of criminal. But we'll soon enough have a terrorist attack, and wring our hands and "woe is me", forgetting all about how virtuous we felt when we were letting these 3rd worlders into a country where they don't belong. And the authoritarian government will still be looking for "white supremacists" around every corner, and likely blaming the attacks on "white rage". Make America great again? You'd have to first find a way to make America, "America" again. And that ship has sailed.
