My mom had a bit of help from her Dad, a little less from her Mom. Nothing at all from my dad's family. She was supposed to get $50 a month in child support. They got divorced when I was 4. He remarried when I was 6. Got another young girl pregnant. And when we did get a child support check, my stepmom signed it. Dad never did learn to manage money. When I turned 18, we figured out that he still owed us about $7000. Mom sometimes worked 3 jobs trying to keep us fed and housed. We moved 32 times before I turned 18. She also married and divorced 3 more husbands, though the last divorce was after I left home. Trying to find us a good dad. That didn't work out well, either. We didn't sue to get that money because by that time I had four half brothers and sisters, and my stepmom was a second mom to my brother and me. We figured we'd done OK without that money. Mom was 15 when I was born, turned 16 the next month. Became a waitress around 19. Worked for Denny's before they started using that name, for a total of 40 years. Also a couple other restaurants. At the same time. Also worked as a salesman for my 1st stepfathers business, and later making bronze plaques for tombstones and business signs. After she got ovarian cancer the first time, and healed up from the surgery & chemo, went back to working at Denny's, until the second time the cancer came back. She passed in 2004.
