Trying to get my ducks all in a row prior to the possible purchase of a 16" barrel AR with a 1 in 8 twist.

Never had a need for factory 5.56 / .223 ammo till now and until I started doing some looking around I've found like everything else nowadays (I should have known) reloading supplies are scarce and .223 ammo is pretty much nonexistent or higher than a giraffe's butt on stilts when you do find it.

I've got fair amount of .223 brass, SR primers and a couple of suitable powders on hand but I don't have any bullets......I'm not necessarily looking for hunting bullets just good, accurate range bullets that will probably never be shot over 200 yds..

I did about a half hours worth of Googling on 1 in 8 twist .223 bullets and saw several places mention the Sierra #1380 69 gr. BTHP Match King......looks like they are running $107.09 per 500 with free shipping from Midway

Anybody ever try them ?.......any better options ?

I have a 1:9 22" and a 1:7 16" and both shoot the Hornady V-Max 55gr No cannelure flat base bullet under 1" at 100 yards.
Less drop than the heavier bullets at longer distances also. In my 1:9 twist it is the most accurate gun I own.
.880" 3 shot group at 300 so far with that bullet.
H4895 powder and CCI 450 primers in annealed fully prepped same brand cases.

There are many that will shoot the 40-50 and 55 v-Max bullets from 1:8 and 1:7 with great accuracy.

Yep, loaded and shot tons of them out of my Savage 110 fp Tactical. I think my smallest group was like .273 @ 100. Also try JP compound on your rifle bore..

I have been shooting Hornady 75 GR in my 1/7 twist good with good results. I bought 2,000 few years back, still have around 1500 in the shelf. the sierras mention above are a good bullets.

I've had 1X7 barrels not shoot 75/77 grain bullets very well to down right unacceptable. I've had 1X9 barrels that shot heavies really well. I have a 1X7 that only shoots 50 grain flat base bullets well. There is no bullet for a certain twist. With that said the 69 gr. bullet is great, except I have a J.P. Enterprises rifle with a 1X9 that shoots the Sierra 69 grain bullets very well around 1 1/2" at 200 yrds for 5 shots. Change that bullet out to a Nosler 69 a d it won't hold 5" at 200..... But it will shot both Sierra and Nosler 55 gr. Ballistic tips into 1.75" at 200. So get some good bullets and try them out and don't worry about the twist rate charts and rings!
