#5 timing - if your going to be buying/trading for revolvers of the same caliber on a regular basis there is a rod you can make or buy to do this.
they are called Range Rods and are available from Brownells. $35 for head and handle combo with other caliber heads at $25. If you have access to a lathe, they are simple to make. just make sure you harden the front edge and that it is square and sharp.

Very good post. I've been using my own personalized version of guidelines very similar to the ones posted above for years. Every revolver I've bought after passing my "checklist" has been rock solid and performed perfectly.
