Have you done it? If so has it sped up or slowed down the process in your opinion? If a member of the ATF reads this then I'm asking for a friend so please don't hold it against me. That is if I'm waiting for anything.

I called on mine pretty close to 6 months, ironically it was approved that day.

I've called on a few. They have always been courteous. They are not going to flag it. More than likely you will get a received date and tell you it is pending. Or I have been lucky a couple of times and they say it has been approved and waiting to go out. Sure enough, it came in a week or so.
According to NFA tracker, it looks like Trusts and Individuals are now running about the same, about 6 months. Indviduals had been running about 3 mouths quicker the trusts. I'd wait about 5 months before calling the way it looks now.

Hopefully, they will get back to the 1-2 months it was 3 years ago. ;)

I’m at 4 months and called, still pending.

They’ll need the serial number of your nfa item, and if it’s a suppressor, they’ll ask for yours and the FFL name. Surprisingly, they answer almost instantly and like the mad professor stated, are very courteous.

They get these calls hundreds of times daily. All they do is punch a few keys on the computer and they have your status. Not a big deal. With today’s technology, I don’t see a reason for the procedure to take so long. They blame it on the FBI who is supposed to be checking fingerprint cards, but even that has computer database technology. I think the delays are coming from higher in administration.

The people who answer the phones at NFA Branch are paid just to do that. They are not the examiners. Calling does not slow anything down.

How do you know when it goes pending? Will they tell you when you call that it went on a certain date?

I usually call about 5 to 6 months in and once a month from then on. They're always nice.

Based on nothing but my own speculation, I'd be surprised if they were even .gov employees. Contracting that job out would be much cheaper, and answering the phones and querying a database is the kind of scut work that's just made for contractors.

I do believe that the folks who answer the phones are contractors.
