Cleaning cases are they really clean, do they need to be?

I reloaded for years with no tumbler, or anything else. I just wiped the brass with a damp rag to get the oogies off it.
The brass turned a dark brown over time, but worked just fine.
Only reason I tumble now : I purchased a large lot of equipment a few years ago. A tumbler, with media, was part of the lot.

I will continue tumbling now, I like the clean brass.
