I was given this by a family member and am trying to figure out which model it is.
Could it be the model M1917? *Found out it is a model 1909. Shoots .45 Long Colt.

Very nice. There was some Colts in 455 Webley too. The gap between the cylinder face and the frame may be the clue. I’m not sure, but either way I’m I wee bit jealous.

Is there any markings on the butt of the grip. My 1917 was U S Army and had the model on the grip butt where the lanyard swivel is.

Marked RNWMP (for Royal Northwest Mounted Police) by any chance?
The forerunner of the RCMP carried those in both .455 and .45 Colt calibers.

ETA: IT looks like a Colt New Service model.
A Colt collector will jump on me for saying this, but the 1917 was just a variation of the New Service to shoot .45 ACP.

I "think" you had to use the half moon clips with the Colt Model 1917 because they did not actually cut chamber edges (chamber mouths?) in the cylinder, and the rimless .45 auto round would slide right through (seem to remember reading that ???).

Thanks for the info. The 45 ACP round just slides right through. So it appears that this is the 1917. No RNWMP markings.
