Redd Foxx was well known as a "blue" comedian back in the day, long before Richard Pryor or Lenny Bruce, but what he had in his stage act and what he could put on a recording weren't necessarily the same thing.50s my friend… things changed as the decades went on ….. now comics need a lot of cussing and call it comedy

FWIW, Pat Morita thought the world of Redd. There's a series of interviews on YouTube with him talking about the impact he had on Morita's life, including the time he went to Foxx to borrow the money so he and his wife could buy their first house. Redd gave him the money on the condition that he not pay it back, but, when he made it, find some struggling young comedian and help him (which Morita said he did several times over).
