If all this hype about 5G is true, cable is dead. The phone companies will have the devices for home internet and you won't need cable.
Hopefully this will spur competition and we won't have the duopoly we have now.

Not for quite a while. First off, 5G adaption will be a year to 2 years. Second, wireless carriers will need to seriously beef up their backbone support to handle that many people with sufficient bandwidth to even compete, much less kill, cable. They have to pay for their bandwidth, and that will flow downhill to the customers. Now, it may offer competition, but not for a while.

I can see cable companies dropping tv service, but cable broadband isn't going anywhere for a long time. Even if 5G proves to be a viable alternative, cable companies can throw up mini towers off their fiber network and offer 5G services.

Cable companies aren't going anywhere due to 5g. While it will have the ability to provide some very high speeds the footprint is very small and it will only be really beneficial in urban areas. Cable companies ability to scale bandwidth is virtually unlimited. Cellular companies are limited by government regulated frequencies and there is only so much it is finite.

Just before lunch I spent 30 minutes on the phone with one of the Cox 'retention specialists'.

Important penalty stuff ------>"Found out that my current 2 year contract with Cox doesn't expire till March 2020 so if I pull the plug on them before then I will get hit with a $240.00 early disconnect fee."

The end result of the 1/2 hour conversation was that in order to keep exactly what I have now all I could get off my bill was $17.48 per month which drops the bill down to $257.93 (from $275.41).......the new rate is guaranteed for 12 months with no additional time being added onto the end of my current contract.

So even though it's better than $275.41 I'm still not happy with paying $257.93 per month but as it stands now if I tell them to take Cox and shove it before March it will cost me a $240.00 early disconnect fee.

The way I see it is that I've now got five months to ask around and do some research and figure out what my best options are other than Cox.

Are all the shows and sports you like on network TV? Start your guide at the beginning and scroll down to see just how many infomercial channels and repeat channels are there on your channel list? I have found a very large percentage of the channels I never watch.

F all those multimedia companies. We left DirectTV a decade ago, went to SlingTV on the Roku for a while and finally decided even that was mostly garbage we were tired of paying for. Ditched Sling and now just have an antenna. There are so many other things I’d rather spend my money on then TV. We have a 3 year old who started to act like cartoons on PBS was high end crack, so we cut back on TV even more. Try to turn on the classical radio station and just open a book while she plays or colors. I don’t want her growing up thinking Tv is the only thing to spend her free time doing.

Off my soapbox. Hate those companies.
You Nailed It!!!!

I’m on Cox 5Ge WiFi in Broken Arrow tonight.
I don’t notice it being any faster but I’m on my phone. Gamers may see improvement.

I had problem with Cox and went to the Oklahoma Attorney Generals website to the consumer complaints office and got Cox to
drop the penalty fee because they wouldn't honor a email ad they sent me to continue service with them. They promised a $50 gift
card after a few months with them and then reneged on sending me the gift card. Why I don't know but they lost a customer
that had been with them for years. Over a crummy $50 gift card! So you might try the AG's office.
