At one point as a kid/teenager we had a bunch of dogs. The thing is they were able to free feed as they needed. However a dog would often get a piece of kibble and then set it down on the floor in front of them and "guard" it. Not eat it just sit there and wait for another one to come over and start to sniff at it. They would literally have a standoff over a single piece of kibble the size of a pencil eraser when a whole bowl full of the stuff was three feet away. My wife's dog is spoiled rotten and he knows it. He also free feeds. I have a big gravity feed container and he can eat what he wants any time. Once a day he gets a special meal which consists of a little bit of whatever I am eating or some peanut butter or something I may have saved at some point for him. That is mixed along with a small handful of kibble and he generally will wait for that vs eating what he has so he doesn't get too full to eat it all. I give him just enough so that he has a nice little taste of something and then is still hungry and goes and eats some plain kibble. My wife started doing this for him early on and I have no intention of making any changes. Even when I take him somewhere he always has a special meal once a day. I saw a post somewhere else not too long ago however about a dog that will not eat the food unless it has been in the microwave and heard the beep. They showed a video of the dog sitting there being given the food in a bowl and the dog turns up his nose. They pick up the bowl put it in the microwave and set a three second timer, the dog can be seen in the background shaking it's tail when the beep goes off. The same bowl is set down and the dog eats without issue. Not dog related but similar was having a bunch of pigmy goats as a very small child (preschool age) and the goats were bottle fed and brought into the house to eat and would be inside for a little bit. They knew the sound the microwave made as if it went off while they were inside they would stand around and bleat wanting to have their bottle. It was kinda like the Pavlov experiment where a bell would be rung and a dog would drool. Eventually when they got bigger they would headbutt whomever was near the microwave, it wasn't long after that they were weaned and outside full time.
