If you are looking at "different" from Alaska or the Caribbean, consider booking on a "transition" cruise. That is what the cruise is called when a cruise company "transitions" from west coast Mexican cruises to the Alaskan cruises. I think they cruise to Hawaii. I don't know the details, or even if that would interest you. With the Alaskan cruises, we booked our ports-of-call through Royal Caribbean in a number of ports along the way. If I remember right, we did one excursion in each port, as well as checking out the local shops. As an avid photographer, I spent a lot of time on the 10th deck of Vision of the Seas because it was the only one where an individual could go all the way around the perimeter of the ship for photographs. I loved that while going through the Inside Passage, which is just about all the way up. We took a cruise and land tour, and I think it was something like 12 or 13 days that included the cruise, and then sightseeing in Anchorage, going to Denali National Park, and on to Fairbanks for the last day or two. I won't swear by anything because I've slept since then, but I think our cruise, including air fare, was around $5000 for the two of us.
