i don't own any silencers, i just had a random thought earlier today and was wondering if anyone would have an answer for me.

lets say you had a 9mm silencer that fit the threads on a .22 caliber gun. when you fired the .22 through the 9mm silencer, would it still reduce the noise?

i know if it was switched where you shot a 9mm through a .22 silencer you would have shrapnel flying and possible injuries.

It would reduce the decibel level of the shot considerably, but it would be nowhere near as effective as a .22 can.

Yes, you can shoot a .22LR thru a 9mm silencer and it will reduce the noise.

I'm assuming you meant .22LR. You asked bout a .22 caliber gun and some would call a .223 a .22 caliber gun. In that case, you could fire it thru the suppressor, but you would probably damage the suppressor.

Pistol calibers you can shoot smaller thru larger. Meaning you can shoot 9mm thru a .45 can.

What you shouldn't do is shoot rifle caliber thru a pistol caliber suppressor.

if your plan is to shoot 22lr through a 9mm can i would not do that either. 22lr ammo is very dirty and leaves a lead deposit and if the 9mm can is a sealed on you cannot clean the lead out.

I agree, but it may also void the warranty on your 9mm silencer. I know of more than one instance the silencer filled up with lead and 22 caliber gunk. I would check on the warranty with which ever model you choose. For anyone that is interested in buying a silencer I always suggest a 22 can for the first purchase.

While you are going to experience lead build up over time, it can be mitigated in stainless steel sealed cans. An all stainless suppressor can be cleaned of lead deposits using 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Likewise, if you are dealing with a large can, such as one of the Bowers MAC or Uzi cans, you would have to shoot an absolutely awesome amount to fill them up...and then you could clean them by other methods.

i don't own any silencers and if i did, i would not be shooting the wrong bullet out of one. it was sheer curiosity.

    thanks for all the answers.

You can clean sealed cans by soaking them in mineral spirits.

Mineral spirits will not remove the lead buildup.

I asked mike friend at the firing line about a .308 suppressor, he said you could use one on a .223 but it wouldn't suppress as much.
