Okay, here goes,,,
Range report on my new CZ 512 Carbine.

aarondgraham.com_pics_160408_ValentinaBoxed.jpg

Short Report:

I love my new carbine.

Long Report:

When I got to the range the crosswind was blowing about 25 mph,,,
I didn't bother with setting out any paper targets,,,
I just tossed out some clays at 25yards.

It was also very overcast,,,
But the red fiber optic front sight was easy to see.

The rifle shipped with one polymer 10 round magazine,,,
But as advertised the 5 round metal 452 mag fit and worked well.

Since precision shooting was out of the question,,,
I decided to see what ammo she likes.

Since I had a 10 & 5 round mags,,,
I fired 30 rounds each of these brands.

The last mag was the 10 rounder,,,
I fired as fast as I could pull the trigger

  • Fiocchi standard velocity LRN
  • Federal American Eagle HP
  • Federal bulk pack (Wal Mart)
  • Federal Auto Match LRN
  • Remington Golden Bullet
  • Remington Mil Surp LRN
  • CCI standard velocity LRN
  • CCI Mini Mag LRN
  • CCI Mini Mag HP

There was not one failure to feed, fire, or eject,,,
270 perfect trigger pulls with the final 10 round mag in rapid fire.

I don't think she's ammo picky at all.

Now about that trigger,,,
I was a tad apprehensive about that.

I've read bad reviews of the 512 trigger,,,
I've also read that CZ fixed this in the carbine.

The first thing I noticed was a very short travel,,,
I don't think the tip of the trigger is moving even 1/8 inch.

I don't really have the terminology to evaluate a trigger,,,
I have no idea what terms like "creep" mean.

What I can tell you is that after just a few pulls,,,
I could anticipate when it would fire,,,
And the pull seems very light.

I'm going to say the trigger has the,,,
aarondhgraham Stamp of Approval. :bthumb:

The rifle has a good heft to it,,,
More than you would expect as it's only 5.12 lbs.

I think it was a good decision on CZ's part,,,
To go with dyed wood rather than a polymer stock.

Aesthetic wise,,,
It could be blacker,,,
It's actually a very dark gray,,,
You can see a little bit of the wood grain.

I wonder what black shoe wax would do to it?

It's so short though that I believe a sling (ala Appleseed) would help,,,
I did notice I had a tendency to wander around the target,,,
But let's not forget that danged crosswind.

I had placed 20 clay pigeons at 25 yards,,,
I hit 19 of them on the first shot.

I know that's nothing to brag about,,,
But I'm old and a bit shaky,,,
And don't forget the wind.

I love the red fiber optic front sight blade,,,
And the rear sight is as nice as the one on my 452 Trainer.

Military style slide for marked elevation steps,,,
Small screw for windage adjustments.

There is one minor detail in it operation I wish were different,,,
You have to count your shots as it does not hold the bolt open on an empty mag.

One could assume that pulling the trigger on an empty chamber is okay,,,
The manual says you may "dry fire" the gun after you unload it.

That's probably okay for unloading
But I don't think I would do it for trigger practice

The slide stop button is in the trigger guard in front of the trigger,,,
That's a bit odd in my opinion but not necessarily bad,,,
It will just take some getting used to is all.

I did have to chuckle at one thing,,,
There was one other person at the range,,,
He said it was a "...very nicely built Ruger 10/22".

Anyways, It's still very windy today,,,
So I think I'll save my ammo and wait for a calmer day.

I want to see how she performs off of my el-cheapo MTM rest at 50 & 100 yards.

So there it is,,,
My first outing with Valentina.

Valentina Binevska was a Czech sniper during WW-II

Let me reiterate,,,
I Love my new Carbine!

My other CZ rifle is the opposite of this one,,,
It's a 452 Military Trainer bolt-action with a 24" barrel.

But you're correct,,,
Every CZ I have encountered,,,
Had more inherent accuracy than I could effectively use.

Hello Chief Sapulpa:

With that threaded barrel you'll have to get busy getting a suppressor!

I keep thinking about it,,,
But I just don't think I want to spend that much coin.

I did talk to some folk at Stillwater Armory,,,
The least expensive suppressor that would work is well over $300.00.

Add the $200.00 to get blessed by the BATF,,,
You're talking about more than I paid for the rifle.

As much as I would like one,,,
I just don't see one in my future.

Now a screw on bayonet,,,

Plenty of 22 suppresors under $300. I got my Warlock 2 from SSP for under $300 after taxes. But yes add the $200 for stamp and it will cost as much as the rifle.

Also unless you shoot subs everything will be supersonic and not be near as fun to shoot

And there you have it,,,
I simply don't have the need for one.

It would be cool but too much money for no real end result.

I'll spend my extra cash on some spare mags.
