One vulnerability I've read about, is the destruction of large numbers of transformers. Exactly how this occurs and even if it is possible, I do not know. Somehow a massive solar flare or EMP caused by an atomic blast at the correct altitude would be the cause. According to this line of thinking, there are relatively few transformers in stock and the capacity to make more is very limited.
My family and I are off grid entirely.... The only things we rely on outside of this farm are:

Water
Shelter
Power
Health Care
Transportation
Education, oh and damn near everything else. The grid is kinda a big deal.

Also, I've been listening to an audio version of a book called One Second After; a fictional story of what life would be like after an EMP attack. Very sobering, and really good book. It's been cited in congress, and I think Newt Gingrich did the foward for it.

man that is a great book. i have read it twice. wait till you read the second book to it called One Year After, it spells out the long term hell.
I know a great way to bring the grid down for most of the united states is to hit about 7-9 transformers across the U.S. and it would put us back to the 1800's in a heartbeat. with AP 7.62 or just a .50 cal round, shoot from range and boom there is at least 2 years if not longer cause there is no extras in the yards and takes Germany a year to build one. here is the thing, it wasn't widely reported but someone shot up some a few years ago in what they think was a dry run to see what happens. A coordinated attack and BAM we are screwed.
