I have only shot around 150 yards max until Saturday. I finally got the courage to stretch out some and shot my AR at 500 yards. Hitting steel at that distance is a satisfying sound. Now I want more. So what should I get with a budget around $1k, including optic and extras.

You need to get practice.
I thought shooting steel would be boring..My first plate at 500 yards was a different experience for me than shooting paper.
I see the plate through the Tasco scope, ease into the trigger on the .308, theround goes off .. the recoil pushed me back..I get back on target just before the round hits the steel. I see a poof of smoke which is the bullet vaporizing on the AR500 plate.
About 1 second later I hear Ting!

Pretty cool indeed.
I shot my .223 savage axis at 500 many times..It has shot bullets closer than 1" apart and widest is 5" on the money.
That is with 1 homemade bag rested on top of my 95 corolla and 55 gr v max hand loaded into Federal cases.

My 10fp .308 will shoot under 5" at 500 as will my $200 mossberg 100 atr all have cheap scopes Tasco target varmit 6-24 and centerpoint 4-16 power.
I have even hit the steel at 500 with the 30-06 and cast loads exiting the barrel at 1400 fps centerpoint scope set on 4 power.

Build some accurate ammo learn to shoot.
The 6.5's look very promsing.
I keep going back to the old stuff .223, .308, 30-06. I have a .243 and just have not stretched it's legs yet.

There are online trajectory calculators that will show you things about wind drift etc with velocity and BC and bullet weight plugged in.
I found my 55 v max does better than 69gr bullets in my .223, based on velocity from my gun and the most accurate loads I can build for each bullet.
The 155gr trumps the 168 and 175 in my .308 for 500 yard shooting.

I hate to say it but with that budget you're not being too serious.

Savage or Tikka in 6.5 Creed, 7-08, or 308. Bipod/rear bag. If you're not set up to precision reload go with the Creed or a 308.

Spend at least the cost (maybe double) of your rifle on glass. You're not just paying for clairity but for tracking ability, parallax, and reliability. In my opinion 10x is fine to 500 yds but if you want to extend to 1K 16x would be min. Vortex or Bushnell come to mind.

Data book

Ballistic app (Shooter is a good one but there are others)

Wind meter (Kestrel)

Laser range finder (Sig K2000 or K2200, Leica 1600B)

Ammo and more ammo, practice and more practice

Ammo and time behind the rifle. Shoot your .223 at 600 yards. It's the equivalent of bigger calibers at further ranges.

I have a Savage 11VT in .223, it has a bull barrel, accutrigger and comes with a Bushnell 4-12x40 scope. It's s a special from Dicks, they have sales seems like once a month and I walked out the door for $417
I replaced the scope and rings with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 and Warne rings for about $450
Also installed an EGW 1 piece scope base for $50
Bolt handle $50
Bi-pod $40
Rear bag $15
Had it threaded $100
= $1,122

Of course the suppressor cost as much as the entire rifle setup, but it had to be done.

Not really. The Creed has about 10" less drop and 15" less drift (10mph cross) than a 223 shooting an 80gr bullet vs a 140gr bullet out of the Creed at 600 yards

I am being serious, just don't have a ton to spend right now. Believe me, there's nothing more I'd like than to be able to just throw down on a Cheytac or a Surgeon but it's just not doable right now. Looking for something to get me started. I can always add better parts or change the gun later when funds allow while I work on fundamentals with a "starter" gun.
