That is a tired trope which has cost the US greatly over a very long span of history. I am all for letting Europeans fight their own wars and I was cold warrior . The Russia today is hardly a serious military threat to the US. Had we not aided the Soviet Union in WWII the end result would have been the same but we would not have had to deal with a communist threat and the Germans would still have been defeated .

I would be more inclined to agree if we fought wars to win them. We don't, we fight wars to prolong them. By all rights we should have been out of Iraq and Afghanistan in a year or two, but we stayed to win hearts and minds. How did that work out?

But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. - Our leaders knew that there was no reasonable way to win a religious or tribal based war that has been going on in the Middle East for 100's is not for 1,000's of years.
- The first year of the conflict was to 'field test' new weapon platforms. The second year was to test the upgrades that were found to be needed. After that, it was just keeping the production lines going in order to keep the shareholders happy.
- Eventually the masses lost interest in supporting an 'endless' war that produced no tangible results or benefits.
