One of my dogs has been limping around for a couple of days. I took her to the vet earlier and got news I am not too happy with. He said her cruciate ligament in her back left leg is torn. I have had about 10 dogs in my life and I have never had anything remotely like this happen. He said I will need to take her to a specialist to have surgery. I don’t have a few grand laying around. And I really don’t want to put that much on one of my cards. But at the same time I love my dog and want her to be ok. Has anyone had this happen to their dog before? My vet did say that it’s possible she could recover and not need surgery but she wouldn’t be able to run around on it like before. Like a human that tears theirs and never gets it fixed. Knowing my luck that won’t happen. He gave me a few different places to take her if I choose to do it. He also gave me a bunch of pain medicine for her. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

If you can bind it up with an Ace bandage, that might help hold it where it can heal better.

Also, ya might consider getting a second Vet's opinion. It may be possible to put her in a cast, or to do some other alternative treatment that's cheaper.

And.... GoFundMe has been used for much less noble reasons. ;)

Just my two cents. Luck.

EDIT: Lol, I must be typing at the speed of turtle... :D

We have a corgi/heeler mix that likes to think he can play with our Pyrenees so this happened to us. My parents had a pit/lab mix that tore both of them. There are two surgery options from what I understand.... we took the "cheaper" option because we honestly figured he damage it again. Recovery sucked because he's active but he's fine now. I make sure he gets glucosamine which seems to help quite a bit. From what I understand the OSU vet hospital is a good one.

I've never heard of it either, what about getting a second opinion?

It's not uncommon in active dogs.

Haven't heard of such and hope it works out for you, pets can be expensive.. Our son has put well over 3k into his 1st pooch that came down with diabetes, they removed an eye and now the other is bad so she's about blind.. She is on twice a day insulin shots, plenty loveable and energetic but a lot of maintenance.. He left at 4 am this morning for Minnesota to visit the father of his girl and ask for her hand in marriage.. So we went from 1 dog to 4 with his 3 and 1 is a 5 month old German short haired pointer that is pulling our arms out of our sockets..

Sad deal for sure. I treat my dogs like humans with the utmost love actually more sometimes than some humans deserve.
But the dog or cat or other animal gets hurt that is tough crap.
You will need to either heal on your own or not heal..Not spending money on an animal.
Yes you will get your parvo shots and worming and rabies but any surgery.. forget it. I have gone through that 2 times and not ever happening again.
Dog may die and that is the way it is.
Sounds harsh I know.
I had a Fila mastiff that got hit by a truck. sounded like a car crash.
My dog was laying in the street and the 80 chevy truck was in the middle of the street stopped and I got over there and hollared at my dog Get your butt in the back yard the dog made it to the gate and fell over which was about 80 feet from the wreck.

She laid on her side for 2 weeks and did not poop for 7 days but she got better and walked fine.
Live or die.
Sounds mean.
Know what is worse Wife took her to the vet when she was 5 months old and they had a new drug for heartworms that you give to the dog 1 time every 6 months.
I thought that chemical stays in your system that long it can't be good and i blame that for shutting down the dog in a short 4 years.
She went blind and her liver shut down in 4 years. I blame doctors and chemicals for that.
No more doctors for my dogs.

Our border collie mix tore both ACLs. First was about 7 years ago and we paid to have it fixed. She was pretty young and was very active. Things were fine until she tore her other one about 2 year ago. Wife opted to get it fixed. Dog is still pretty active for being 11. For us, her quality of life would have suffered greatly if she didn't have the surgery. But everyone has a scale they must balance.

Our Shih Tzu/wire hair terrier mix did that on his right rear leg. About $2500 dollars later, he was fixed.
A year or so later, he did the left leg, so that worthless POS is worth 5 grand now. He kept trying to outrun our 50 lb Brittany Spaniel that took off out the front door at a full run and the little 16 lb dog kept trying to keep up. We had to let them out at separate times finally.

OSU vet hospital has a new technique for replacing the ACL that is supposed to work wonders. I literally heard about it this morning at 11 am. Dunno about details, but my doc took his dog for it and was going to pick him up this afternoon. They also have a great bed side manner.
