I watched a doe do that at the feeder behind my house last week. She was obviously the mature matriarchal doe, and the younger does got the heck out of her way.
We have does in our yard nightly. There is certainly a pecking order when feeding. Wife used to just dump a gallon of corn in the yard but the momma doe would guard it by kicking the hell out of the younger deer.
She started dumping little piles all over the yard but momma still kept chasing the others off.
