Something I was wondering. As far as I know 4473's are for the background checks that are required when you purchase a gun from a dealer and not a private sale (at least Oklahoma allows private sales) and gun dealers are required to destroy them after ten years.

This brings me to wonder, how is it after a period of time such as ten years they still know who originally purchased the particular firearm when they run the serial #?

Could there be a database the people aren't aware of?

Well when a gun dealer closes all records go to the AG, thus the bound books (which have all of the data in them too and are kept forever)and any 4473's in retention never go away(4473's are I believe are kept for 20 years). They way they find stuff is to search, search and search.

I am not a laywer and didnt even stay in a holliday inn express, but the above is from what I understand from dealers and if you research on line in the code of federal regs.

Remember the letters they sent out to all those people who bought 40 glocks requiring them to submit to a ballistic test after those two little girls where shot last year in Wetoka (I think this is close spelling). Someone has a list someplace with the info from 4473's.

So in a sense there's an unofficial registry?
No, it is perfectly official

What's the big deal about gun registration anyway?
I'm not saying I'm in favor of it, but what difference does it really make? It doesn't seem to violate the Constitution in any way.....

Wetoka (I think this is close spelling)

Weleetka. ;)

Im surprised they never asked me about my Glock 22 I used to have. I got caught carrying unlawfully in 07' got my gun back and sold it to my cousin's friend. Granted my cousin's friend is a bit of a loser and never gets out of his house aside from going to WalMart so I know he wasn't involved. But it was on record with my name that I had owned one because they gave me a receipt when I got the gun and five empty magazines back. They kept the bullets :)

Hell until I looked at a map I didn't even know where that town Wakeeta was.
