Tried out the IMR4064 today with my .308. Built a ladder test with some 168grain Hornady ELD Match bullets; also made a ladder test with some 168grain Hornady HPBT Match bullets. Long story short, the ELD’s are absolute junk in my rifle. I’ll post pictures of the targets later. The HPBT’s worked pretty good. Had a decent group with 41.0 grains but not on my actual target because I forgot to reset my zero stop. Lmao.

But then I had 20 rounds loaded with 175 Grain Sierra MatchKings. Everything with them was the same as far as COL and trim length goes. Powder was 41.7 grains. I decided to do a 5 shot group to see how they grouped compared to the 168’s. Let’s just say now that I wish I didn’t waste the powder on the 168grain ladder test. Live and learn. Ended up taking the other 15 rounds I had loaded and moved over to the 1000 yard range. Hit gongs at 500-700-and 1000 yards.

Here’s the paper target from my 5 shot group at 100 yards:

Looks like you are onto something.

I’ve got a Springfield Waypoint with a carbon fiber barrel in 308 on its way to me, so I will be working on some 308 loads soon. I’m wanting to load mine with hunting bullets instead of match, so been trying to determine the best ones to start testing. I’d like to keep the speed up as much as possible so hoping 165’s or 168’s shoot good in my rifle.

Very nice group, I think the 175's outshoot the 168's all day. I have not had good luck with the eld's on any platform
I have had way better luck with v-max or a-max. Luckily I have a big stash of 175 a-max, good luck with berger's aswell
Again very nice group there

thank you. I just can’t believe how terrible the ELD’s are. My buddy uses them in his 6.5 and gets good groups but in my .308 they’re just terrible. I have 480 Sierra Matchkings left so I should be ok for awhile.

I tried the 178 ELD-X in one of my 308’s and couldn’t get good groupings. Loaded them in my 300 Rem SAUM and they are outstanding. Weird that the twist rate for both calibers/rifles are the same so am thinking they must need higher velocity to stabilize.

I’ve played with both the 168 and 175 SMKs a lot in my m1as and bolt 308s. My best groupings with the 175 were 1/2 moa at 200yds with 42grs of imr4064, or 45grs of Varget the high and low modes for me). Glad you finally got ahold of some 4064!
