I picked up a Steyr Mountain rifle in .30-06 from a buddy of mine several years back. It kicked like a MULE and felt like a .300 WinMag, so I put a brake on it which tamed it down to .243-ish on the recoil. I never was happy with it, switched scopes three times, spent several hundred on various factory loads trying to find what it liked. Still no luck. Lapped the barrel. Still no luck. Re-cut the crown at 90 degrees, still no luck. It kind of liked 180's and the cold bore was always spot on, then it went crazy. I gave it a hard cleaning and got every spot of copper and powder out of it and took it out yesterday for one last chance. BOO-YEAH, three shot group at 200yds just slightly under 1-1/2". Three shot average was 2732 FPS with factory Winchester 180's out of a 16-1/2" barrel. The middle shot is the cold bore.
