Coming from one of the bigger 1911 fans on this site, I say find yourself a G19. Only because the price and availability of ammo and it would be a great platform to get down the fundamentals.

Now if you REALLY just have to have a .45 you really can't beat the 1911. :D Colt series 70 or XSE would do nicely. I pretty much second everything BigRed82 said.

If you are new to hand guns maybe an auto is not the best place to start. Consider a Colt or S&W in .357 Mag. They'll both shoot .38 Special for practice. It will fill the requirement for home defense and a shooter and is easier to learn to shoot for some folks. Or, maybe I should just keep my mouth shut!
