Dang I’m glad I looked at this, I’d already scheduled off work on April 6 thinking it was opening day.

I’ve been hunting turkeys since the early 80’s and I think it’s always been on the 6th.

Until the late 80's it started on March 25th. As a kid and teenager, I was more excited about March 25th than October 1st lol. I can remember spending the night at a friend's the night before season watching the Exxon valdez spill coverage, that was 88' or 89' iirc.

We used to have a lot more turkey in our yard 10-20 years ago. Sometimes up to 50. Over the years the flock has dwindled to about 10. Four toms and 6 hens. We don't hunt them, and the neighbors don't allow any hunting either.
There is something other than hunting that is having an effect on the populations, and I put it to nest robbers as nobody is trapping anymore.
We used to have hens all around us sitting on the nests. Later in early summer we would have lots of hens and poults around. Now we see hens with one or two poults if that.
What I see is turkey eggshells broken when mowing in early spring that tells me the nest robbers have struck again. I keep traps going when home, but it's a never-ending supply of raccoons to replace those that are trapped and dispatched.

I’ve been seeing a ton of turkeys recently. I might try my hand at it. never tried.

I’ve been out hunting and such the past few days. This morning my morning commute from my campsite was put to a grinding halt due to turkeys doing the dirty in the middle of the road. The Tom’s beard was full and easily 8+ inches long too. I don’t know if that’s big by turkey standards, but he was a Gorgeous specimen.

I don't kill them anymore, but do love to mess with them and see how close I can call one in. That is the sport for me.
Nothing against anyone that wants to harvest one though. I've taken many over the years actually winning a national contest one time. Tom had 5 beards with a total length of 11 inches or so. Don't remember, I'd have to go to the shop and look at the trophy that has the actual measurements engraved on it.

I didn’t know that the “shock gobble” was a thing until recently. It’s now one of my favorite things to do if I spot some turkeys. So much fun.
