Yep. The guy might be improving his collection and selling others. It is not illegal to sell unwanted guns for a profit.

And people that want to call the AFT on people for it is disgusting.
Not reporting the profit is illegal. It is income.

But mentioning you can’t make money off of it at that price, contradicts the assumption he’s buying for a collection.
‘He then says "at that price, I can't make any money on it, that's just how it is, you know?" Then, without any response on my part, he hands me it back, tells me how he buys guns all over the place and shops hundreds of garage sales, and leaves.’
At this point, I wouldn’t put it past 3 letter agencies from intentionally dropping hints of illegal activity or ineligibility when buying guns. Best bet is to call the buyer out and don’t sell.

As I say often, group x sucks at policing themselves.

If you look for guns that are a bit underpriced, buy it and then use that later to trade for something to improve your collection it is NOT illegal.

To quote a gun rights lawyer. ANYTHING OTHER THAN MINIMUM COMPLIANCE IS SELF REGULATION.

policing ourselves doesn't mean over enforcing unconstitutional laws.

Unconstitutional or not, it is the law of the land.

The part that bothers me about it is if he's dumb enough to admit out loud to committing a federal crime (engaging in the business of buying and selling firearms without an FFL), he is more than dumb enough to bring that trouble back into your life when you least expect it.

To paraphrase Sheriff Buford T. Justice, you can think about it, but don't you say it.
Perhaps he was baiting, hoping that you would admit to also mass-selling firearms for profit. ATF guys are tricky like that 🤔

Doubt he’s an ffl. If not what he’s doing is illegal
I won't tell if you won't, in my opinion, a man should be able to buy and sell as many guns as he wants and the government should keep their nose out of it. Now I sound like a libertarian. Oh well, more power to the freedom loving capitalist out there that are making bank on the Biden gun/ammo run!!!
