yeah, the more I think about it the more I have zero desire to go through with it. The guy wants $1500 for a puppy he is willingly breeding some sort of issue into.

only downside is that now I am pretty sure I’m out of Wirehair pointing griffon breeders in Oklahoma. Next closest is central Colorado and Idaho. I am not sure about the Colorado breeder either because one of the dams has almost blonde spots, which is from what I’m guessing to be some sort of inbreeding. Looks like I may be making 3 trips to Idaho, if I find the conversation to be fruitful.
I forgot the $1500 part, and in that case, there’s absolutely no way in hell I’d buy the dog.

So I finally hit in touch with a breeder, talked for a while with the guy, and I have a few concerns. The gentleman has had 2 failed breedings with the same dam recently, and will be trying again soon. Sounds like her and the sire are older dogs. The new sire this time around is younger, but has some sort of asymmetry in his back legs. No risk of hip displaysia, just a little asymmetry. The breeder says that because of difficulties and the asymmetry he is putting a breeding restriction on the litter. I don’t plan on breeding my dog, but this has me concerned. Should I be?
Run!

vom Kervinshof Kennels | Versatile Hunting Dog Training has German Drathaars, which are similar to Griffons. I visited and watched the owner exercise his dogs once. I was very impressed.

I work with a guy that has one of his dogs.

Less than a year old. They are in Montana right now, on their first hunting trip together.
I think that we may have a second breed to look at. Been doing a lot of reading on them, and I keep finding two interesting things. People constantly refer to Wirehair Pointing griffons as sensitive or emotional. I don’t know if that’s something I would do well with, but maybe it’s fine. Maybe people are over exaggerating? But I also keep reading about the drahthaars having some sort of crazy killer instinct, where they’re made out to be some sort of uncontrollable small animal killing machine. Guess I need to call some more breeders, lol.

I’ve heard that’s an issue, but I don’t how big an issue. He hasn’t mentioned anything to me about the dog being overly aggressive.

I’m a lot like you in that I can’t have a sensitive dog. I guess it’s my voice. I don’t know. I ruined a Brittany. My shorthairs were never fazed, and I’ve beat the living piss out of eng pointers and all it did was tear up my hat.

I hunted eng pointers for a long long time. Then I got shorthairs, and I spent a lot more time hunting birds instead of dogs. (That’s a dog joke, get it?)

Yeah, having a “soft” dog I feel is an issue. While I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement and providing a loving home for my animals (they get spoiled plenty), I also need an animal that I can have a little leeway with, as this will be the first dog I’ve hunted with personally. A whole different ball game from hunting with someone who already has dogs. I need something that I can make a mistake with and not ruin, whether it be in obedience or hunting training. I do think I’m leaning more towards Drahthaars, as they also appear to have a less heavy coat than the wire hair pointing griffon.

the more I read into things, the more I realize I miss upland game hunting as well, we’ll likely get heavy into that.
